Edgeland House is placed on a rebuilt brownfield site and is a modern re‐interpretation of one of the most ancient housing designations in North America, the Native American Pit House. The Pit House, specifically sunken, takes advantage of the earth’s mass to preserve warm comfort along the year. Such as this timeless dwelling, Edgeland House’s correlation to the landscape both in terms of way as well as building performance includes an insulative green roof and a seven‐foot excavation‐ gaining benefits from the earth’s mass to help it remain cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Such a decorative layout presents a chance for optimum energy efficiency when incorporated with high performance systems like the integrated hydronic HVAC system. The mechanical system incorporated: hydronic heating and a green roof for optimum energy efficiency.
Edgeland House is regarding therapy the land and ameliorating the seams of the site’s industrial past. The residence increases consciousness regarding a decrescent natural landscape and its limited resources by designing a harmony among the surrounding industrial area and the natural river residing on the foreign side of the site.
Both visually and functionally, Edgeland House mentions on architecture as site‐specific installation art and as an extension of the view. The program is broken up into two special pavilions, for the living and sleeping quarters, and needs direct contact with the outside components to pass from one to the other. This project manages new standards for sustainability while featuring great artistic qualities via its small footprint and integrated mechanical styles.
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center collaborated to revive over forty native species of plants and wildflowers to the Edgeland House green roof and site, serving to help maintain the local ecosystem.
